What to include in your summary - year 9

On Tuesday you focus on writing your summaries of the short stories you read last week. Here's some suggestions on what to include...we'll talk more about it in class though. :

Swedish students try Kiwi candy!

Here's the video that I promised in June(!)  - where my students taste some Kiwi candy - unfortunately some of you may not be able to see it as Mac doesn't support Java, but for me it works with Safari as web browser. Thanks for the treats Kerri and students!

The students are here!!! Yippie!

The students are back!!! Yes!!! Yesterday the wonderful creatures arrived back in school to start a new school year and the school buildings are alive again! Their classroom has had its brick walls painted white and I've added a couple of posters in English: classroom expectations and some pointers for self assessment. The phrases of the week from last school year are hanging on the side of a cupboard in the classroom, and we hope to add more phrases throughout the semester.

Short story template

I'm continuing working with Canva a bit, I really like it and I hope to have the time to make good templates for various assignments in reading and writing. Today I made the one above - my students will read short stories at the beginning of the semester and this might be a good way for them to make notes while reading. In the long run this will also help them when writing a summary of the short story later on. Feel free to use if you want.

Don't forget your self assessment

I hope to use this poster in my classrooms and to come back to it every week. The students should be able to jot down two-three things that they have an opinion about after the lessons. This way they are challenged to reflective thinking.

and here's an empty document for the students to write on....feel free to use it if you want.

In this classroom.....

This will hang in my classrooms shortly...many more things could be added of course, but it's a good start. :)

Global Read Aloud - looking forward to reading and global collaboration

I've registered for GRA (Global Read Aloud), starting on October 5. First time for this. Looking forward to doing this project with my 8th graders - and time willing we hope to reconnect with some "old" hangouters from New Zealand from last school year. Reading aloud in the classroom is not something we do very much, but it's definitely something that needs to be done MORE. Kids today are so visually stimulated through their screens (mobiles, tvs, computers, ipads ...) that it's only a good thing to try to turn those eyes away for a while, and to focus on listening - and to listen for a long period of time. To listen and to make up your own visions in your head. Really excited about this!

The book chosen is Fish by L.S. Matthews.
