To know something "by heart" could mean that you know something so well that you know it perfectly. This is the phrase for the week for my classes!

We're continuing with our work with proverbs, idioms, similes and so on this week too. This video we'll have a look at during the lesson on Monday (today). 

Idioms - year 8 - task for the lesson on Thursday

Today I am staying home with my little son who has a fever (I think another tooth is on its way) so you will have to follow the following instructions:

We will work with idioms, proverbs, metaphors and similes for a few lessons, starting today.  I want you to start working on your own with the following:

1. Take a look at this: Idioms and try to explain what the following four words mean: idiom, proverb, metaphor, simile. Write down the explanations. Try to understand what the differences between them are, if there are any...


2. Watch the following two videos to understand some common sayings in English.

3. Have a look at this site: http://www.idiomsite.com/ and take a few minutes to look around and read some idioms.

4. After Easter I will give you exercises to work with and then you will also get the chance to illustrate an idiom/proverb/metaphor/simile while working with Kate in Arts. You can now try to decide on which idiom to illustrate.

This week's phrase is "Hold your tongue"..... something that my students sometimes need to be reminded of. :)

Snapshot from today

This week I started with "phrase of the week." Each week I will present a phrase or idiom to my classes - the same one for all of them - and we are going to help each other explain the phrases and discuss in what context we might find them. Also, what do they mean in Swedish? The phrase will sit on the whiteboard for a week until it is time for a new one to make its entrance.  My idea is to surround the students with English - what they see and hear is what they will learn...
This week's phrase is: A piece of cake.
